Job Description

The Town of Ashfield seeks qualified applicants for the position of Chief of Police. Ashfield is a diverse community of 1,800 located in western Franklin County. The Department will consist of the Chief and up to 4 reserve officers. The successful candidate must possess a proven record of community and organizational leadership, executive management skills, and ability to work with a Select Board or any Municipal body. The Police Chief will perform administrative, technical and supervisory work directing the operations of the Department and enforcing pertinent laws and bylaws. The Chief will be responsible for managing, maintaining and improving upon the efficiency and effectiveness of the Department, including developing grant applications and Department budgets.

Job Requirements

  • Education: Candidate should possess a Bachelor’s Degree in criminal justice or public administration. Candidate must be a graduate of the Massachusetts Full‐time Basic Police Officer Academy or possess Massachusetts Certification of equivalent training from another state.
  • Experience: Ten years of progressively responsible (preferably municipal) law enforcement, including five years of senior supervisory experience.
  • Additional Experience: Experience working with a Select Board, supervising a diverse police force, and prosecuting criminal complaints preferred. Qualified in the use of weapons, Lidar, and other police equipment; Incident Command Systems 100 – 200 – 300 – 400 First Responder; and pass a criminal offender information request(CORI), physical and psychological exams, and drug and alcohol screening. Individual must maintain residency within 15 miles of Ashfield (timing negotiable).

Salary Information

Will be competitive with other area towns and dependent on experience.

Out of State Applicants

A person who has been employed as a municipal police officer in another state and is being hired in Massachusetts may qualify for a Permanent Exemption from recruit training. We are requiring out of state applicants to provide the Ashfield Police Chief Search Committee with a favorable advisory letter from the Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) prior to appointment. In order to determine whether one qualifies for Permanent Exemption, you must submit information to the Exemptions Coordinator of the MPTC, and request an advisory letter. This letter must be favorable and must be obtained prior to appointment to the Ashfield Police Chief Position.
