Dog Licenses
State law requires that all dogs six months of age and older in the Commonwealth must be licensed annually. Proof of current rabies vaccination is required for all dog licenses. The deadline for obtaining a license is March 31 of each year.
NEW - Individual licenses are now available for up to three years (determined by rabies expiration date)!
You can license or renew these ways:
- Online via UniPay, the license and tag will be mailed to you ($1 is added for shipping and handling along with UniPay fees)
- In-person during normal business hours with cash or check
- By Mail with check payable to Town of Ashfield sent to: PO BOX 560, Ashfield, MA 01330, Attn: Dog Licensing (add $1 for shipping & handling or send your own self addressed stamped return envelope)
- Leave your check in the drop box located by the flagpole outside Town Hall (add $1 for shipping & handling or send your own self addressed stamped return envelope)
Dog Licensing fees are as follows, per dog:
- Intact dogs - $10.00 per year (1 year $10, 2 years $20, 3 years $30)
- Neutered or Spayed - $5.00 per year (1 year $5, 2 years $10, 3 years $15)
- Kennel licenses
- A late fee of $35 will be added for dogs not licensed by June 1
Ashfield Dog Bylaws

Any owner or keeper who allows his/her dog to do any of the following is in violation of the bylaw. (a) Run at large or go beyond the confines of his/her property unless the animal is held firmly on a leash or under the verbal control of the owner or keeper. (b) Bite, bark, howl or in any other manner disturb the peace or quiet of any neighborhood or endanger the safety of any person. (c) Run at large or unmuzzled in violation of any order of the Select Board or the Animal Control Officer. (d) Worry, kill, maim or otherwise injure another’s fowl, livestock or domestic animal. (e) Chase another’s vehicle, person, bicycle in any way open to public travel. (f) Be unlicensed or untagged in violation of state law. (g) Is in any other way a nuisance or danger to a person or the Town. (Ashfield Dog Bylaw, Section 2)
